As I've said before, two percent is a floor and not a ceiling, and we need this increased investment to ensure our credible collective defense and to continue to modernize the alliance's capabilities. It will affirm our shared commitment to spend at least two percent of national GDP on defense, with the aim of spending more than two percent to meet the alliance's defense needs. In Vilnius, NATO will have the opportunity to expand its practical, nonlethal support for Ukraine's current fight, and that will also be a chance to lay the foundations for modernizing and reforming Ukraine's defense institutions and making the transition to NATO-standard equipment. As I've noted, they'll be meeting in challenging times, and a summit will be an important opportunity to discuss how NATO will continue to meet this moment. In just a few weeks, our leaders will gather for NATO's Vilnius Summit. Now, let me turn to some of our important business at this NATO ministerial. Das Boot depicts the lives and the circumstances of the men serving aboard U-boats, and shows that, like all soldiers in all wars, they were ordinary individuals, each with their own hopes and fears, all with the desire to do their best for their comrades and their country.Ī lengthy critique of Das Boot and how it was received upon its initial release in Germany can be found in Michael L. Director Wolfgang Petersen was admittedly obsessive about the structural detail of the U-boat set, remarking that "every screw" in the set was an authentic facsimile of the kind used in a World War II U-boat.įind out more about the making of Das Boot, including frequently asked questions, in the Notes section below.įew can dispute Das Boot's anti-war message. The actors also went through weeks of intensive training in order to learn how to move quickly and expertly through the narrow confines of the vessel. Throughout the filming, the actors were forbidden to go out into the sunlight, in order to simulate the pallor of the U-boat men who seldom saw the sun throughout the duration of their missions. ![]() Gouts of cold water were hosed over the actors to similate the breaking ocean waves. The U-boat set was mounted on a rig that could incline up to 45 degrees, and was vigorously shaken to simulate depth charge attacks. The director's meticulous attention to detail resulted in the most realistic submarine movie, and one of the most historically accurate war movies, ever made. The original 1981 version had been the most expensive movie to date in the history of German film. The result - Das Boot: The Director's Cut. Petersen oversaw the editing of six hours of film, from which was distilled his vision of the perfect cut, including completely recreated and digitally mastered sound effects. The result is a film that portrays the ordinary individuals that made up U-boat crews, and show the frequent tedium of their missions as well as the tension and excitement of attack and evasion. Das Boot: The Director's Cut, released in 1997, combines the action-packed sequences of the original movie with some character-development scenes contained in the mini-series. It was also produced as a six-hour television mini-series aired in Germany in 1981. The spectacular special effects and edge-of-your-seat action scenes make this not only the best U-boat movie ever made, but one of the best movies in the history of film.ĭas Boot, based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim's novel of the same name, was first filmed as a 145-minute movie, released in Germany in 1981 and in the United States in 1982, where it was nominated for six Academy Awards. We are witness to both the excitement of battle and the tedium of the fruitless hunt. The film follows the U-96 from its departure from La Rochelle, France, through its patrols in the North Atlantic and its attempted penetration of the Mediterranean, until its fateful return to harbor once more in La Rochelle. Summary The Storyĭas Boot is the story of a single mission of one U-boat and its crew. Franz josef glacier8/2/2023 Today Anderson is an associate professor at the Antarctic Research Centre at Victoria University of Wellington, specialising in using mathematical modelling to show how glaciers have moved through history – and project where they might go. “That contradiction really grabbed me … I wanted to understand how that thing worked, and what it was telling us.” “You could see that it was moving, it was flowing – but at the same time it was solid,” he says by phone from his home further north on the west coast. At that time the ice was advancing, covering paths just about as fast as the guides could cut them in.Įven now, Anderson remembers it with awe. Growing up in Hokitika, Brian Anderson was taken onto the top of Franz Josef glacier on a school trip around 1993. For much of their history, people have been able to walk right up to the terminus, to see for themselves the snow as a shifting mass – a river only just made solid. Just a 30-minute drive separates Franz Josef and Fox and their namesake glaciers, among the largest in New Zealand. Most are in the Southern Alps, a 450km mountain range running down the spine of the South Island, within five hours’ drive of Christchurch and Queenstown. What distinguishes those in New Zealand is the monitoring of their retreat – and the fact you do not need to be a scientist in a plane to see it.Ĭompared with the 198,000 glaciers globally, the 3,000 in Aotearoa are relatively easy to access. The outlook is similarly grim for glaciers the world over, with human-induced climate warming the chief factor in their decline. Some glaciers had shrunk so much, they were hard to see many would be gone within decades.Ī new analysis of more than 200,000 global glaciers found that those in New Zealand showed record thinning of 1.5m a year from 2015-2019 – a nearly sevenfold increase compared to 2000-2004. The summer of 2017-2018 – which saw January temperatures of nearly 3C warmer than average – was the worst on record, scientists said. More recent surveys have been even more sobering. Over 40 years, annual aerial surveys of the Southern Alps have shown the altitude at which snow persists throughout the year is climbing higher, and the overall volume of ice reducing – with flow-on effects for the glaciers.Īnalysis by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) revealed that from 1977 to 2014, a third of the permanent snow and ice was lost from the Southern Alps – a dramatic decline that began accelerating rapidly in the last 15 years. But lately these immense bodies of ice – so vast and ancient as to have carved the surface of the Earth – have been losing ground in a warming world. “You can try and understand it, predict it, know what it’s going to do next.”īy nature, glaciers go through phases of advance and retreat. “I fell in love with the glacier a long time ago – I think just because it’s moving, it’s living, it’s changing,” he says. On the computer in his office, Goodwin has collected thousands of photos of the glacier, dating back to the late 19th century and its early days as a tourist destination. What drew Goodwin in was the local history – stories of the glacier’s storming advances, sometimes so fast that snow would swallow shoes left at its base within a day and the subsequent periods of retreat, revealing gear and paths from the past. Now he and his wife Tash run their own company, taking nature walking tours through the glacier valley. Soon afterwards, Goodwin got a job as a glacier guide – and one season turned into many. ![]() “I did what most young boys did: jumped over the barriers, went and walked on the ice, and had a great old time,” he says. The sight of snow was almost startling, so close to the ocean – the glacier terminates only 20km from the Tasman Sea – and so close up.īut Goodwin was not content just to look. But soon after arriving in Franz Josef – on the West Coast of the South Island, at the foot of the Southern Alps – he went to see the town’s biggest draw for himself.Ī short drive into the valley, Goodwin was confronted by the bright white face of the glacier: a thick seam of ice churning its way down from the mountains and into the stony riverbed below. Goodwin had been intending to top up his bank account, then go. ![]() “I worked until I had $1,000, then I travelled until I had $100,” he says. ![]() It was 2001, and Goodwin had been travelling down the length of New Zealand from his hometown Taranaki, doing odd jobs: fruit picking, housekeeping. ![]() W hen Cliff Goodwin first came to Franz Josef he didn’t know what a glacier was.
